BeninΒ is a country inΒ West Africa. It is bordered byΒ TogoΒ to the west,Β NigeriaΒ to the east, andΒ Burkina FasoΒ andΒ NigerΒ to the north. The majority of its population lives on the small southern coastline of theΒ Bight of Benin, part of theΒ Gulf of GuineaΒ in the northernmost tropical portion of theΒ Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Benin isΒ Porto-Novo, but theΒ seat of governmentΒ is inΒ Cotonou, the country’s largest city and economic capital. Benin covers an area of 114,763 square kilometresΒ and its population in 2016 was estimated to be approximately 10.87 million. Benin is aΒ tropicalΒ nation, highly dependent onΒ agriculture, and is a large exporter ofΒ cottonΒ andΒ palm oil. Substantial employment and income arise fromΒ subsistence farming.
TheΒ official languageΒ of Benin isΒ French. However, indigenous languages such asΒ FonΒ andΒ YorubaΒ are commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin isΒ Roman Catholicism, followed closely byΒ Islam,Β VodunΒ andΒ Protestantism. Benin is a member of theΒ United Nations, theΒ African Union, theΒ Economic Community of West African States, theΒ Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, theΒ South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone,Β La Francophonie, theΒ Community of Sahel-Saharan States, theΒ African Petroleum Producers AssociationΒ and theΒ Niger Basin Authority.
From the 17th to the 19th century, the main political entities in the area were theΒ Kingdom of Dahomey, along with the city-state ofΒ Porto-Novo, and a large area with many different nations to the north. This region was referred to as theΒ Slave CoastΒ from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of enslaved people who were shipped to the New World during theΒ Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After enslavement was abolished, France took over the country and renamed itΒ French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France. TheΒ sovereign stateΒ has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments.
AΒ MarxistβLeninist stateΒ called theΒ People’s Republic of BeninΒ existed between 1975 and 1990. In 1991, it was replaced by the currentΒ multi-partyΒ Republic of Benin.
